Raavan: Enemy of Aryavarta – Book (2019)

Written by Amish Tripathi, Raavan is the third edition of his ongoing Ram Chandra series. Based on the famous characters of Ramayan, Amish, with all his book has tried to give a human touch to Hindu God’s and their life story. While I love his take on these familiar stories, I till date remain astonished that how he has managed to get away with it for so long (for many reasons you can very much guess).

Coming to this particular book, it was different from all his previous work because he was not writing from a POV of a beloved hindu God, but from POV of one of the most hated villan – Raavan.

While as always I will not give spoilers. I will say that this book in particular makes us sympathize with him, makes us understand a bit of his mind better ( or that of Raavan in the book) and makes you look at Kumbhkaran and realize how “human” he was by standing by Ravaan and supporting him till the very end.

Amish as a writer has grown over the years, while his thought process remains same as when he wrote the Shiva Trilogy.

The problem with this is that it might mean that his next book in the Ram Chandra series might be as rushed as it was during “The oath of Vayuputras”…in simple terms, the final book will look like season 8 of the Game of Thrones series which started it’s narrative at snail pace from season 1 to 6 but rushed the last two season coz they needed to catch up.

I would also like to point out that his editors note to the audience at the beginning of Raavan hints that a lot has happened since he finished writing this book.

While these events might or might not affect the writing of his current book, it does hint that the next book will further probe the human psyche of the characters and give a much deeper insight on how they function.

Is this me reading too much into his writing? Might be, but it definitely makes you more curious about his future work, especially looking at how he has written Raavan.
